Three days of holiday
Wojtek and I found a perfect place for short holiday in Poland. We spent a fantastic weekend in a unique agritouristic hotel – Stara Szkoła (The Old School, Wysoka Wieś 27, 14-100 Ostróda, north Poland, Mazury Lake District) which originates from the XIX century. You can find more about the place and its location here.
The owners spent five years and put a massive effort into renovation, decoration and creating a very homely atmosphere. All is their own work of which they are very proud. There are only five rooms there, all with old-fashion furniture but with modern minimalism at the same time. We stayed in room 4 called Scholastic but next time we plan to try another one.
The main role in this hotel is played by the kitchen – very big, divided in two parts: for cooking and for dining. At the massive table everybody eats together and is invited to nice chat over dinner to the late evening. The kitchen shows that good food is very important for the owners. Well, I have to admit that it was one of the tastiest weekend in my life. Everything, probably except of wine and coffee, on the table was local from garden or neighbourhood. For breakfast we could choose from a great selection of cottage cheese, fresh jam and butter, honey, traditional bread, fish paste, vegetables and fruits just from the yard, eggs, cookies… and instead of green tea we had nettle tea picked by the landlady in May. Next year I’ll pick and dry it myself as well. I absolutely loved it for its mild and delicately sweet taste.
For dinner we were served 4 dishes! Everything freshly prepared by the owners with some help from local cooks. Once I was shocked, they served veal but didn’t tell which part of veal it was, after desert we got to know that we just had eaten a tongue! It was my debut and ok, I admit it was great, but I won’t try this again (if I know what I’m eating)- it’s too weird for me.
Stara szkoła is really a perfect place to relax, enjoy calmness nature, beautiful views, lovely rustic food with international inspirations (especially French), the darkest nights you can ever imagine and company of very interesting people.
If you have kids it is a heaven for them. Antek, the owners little son, will take care of them and invite to play in his tree-house, while you can idly lay on a deckchair reading some book from their great collection.
To fully relax you can go to the nearby SPA of Dr Irena Eris and get some facial and body treatment or amazing massage. They also have a slow food restaurant, so next time we’ll try their courses.
Three days in breathtaking surroundings where time goes slowly is much better than two weeks anywhere else!
