Our top 5 steak places in Europe

Steak 1

It’s December, Christmas is coming and I decided to spend this time eating my favourite food. Steaks are quite high on my list so if I could I would choose one of these places for dinner today or actually every day this week.

1. L’Entracôte (Paris) – my absolute number one when it comes to steaks. Le Relais de Venise, widely known as L’Entrecôte,wasfounded by Paul Gineste de Saurs in Paris. It has now expanded internationally but it is still manage by the family. The formula is quite simple: lettuce-and-walnut salad as a starter; steak-frites with a secret butter as the main course, served in two turns. They don’t accept bookings so if you don’t arrive early enough be prepared to queue even up to an hour to get your table. All worth it though! My favourite location is L’Entrecôte Saint-Germain in Paris’s 6th arrondissement.2. Butchery and wine (Warsaw) – if you still think that Argentinians have the best steaks it means you haven’t been to Central Europe recently. Meat from this little Polish restaurant is probably the best I have had for ages – tender, cooked to perfection and served just how I like it without any unnecessary fuss…  Add to this a nice glass of wine, good company and winter seems actually quite pleasant.

3. Carnevalle (Bratislava) –a little bit too fancy for my taste but those guys really know a lot about the best meat. It is presented to you before cooking; you can choose its type, cut and size. Try some of the local wines with your steak, I especially recommend red Dunaj (Dunaj, výber z hrozna, Elesko, 2009) – I almost got addicted to it during my recent stay in Slovakia.

4. Henri (Brussels) – those who read my blog regularly know that this is one of my favuorite restaurants in Brussels. It’s so popular nowadays that I recently couldn’t even get a table on a cold November Monday night. Their steak and fries is probably the best in Belgium. I don’t think there is a need to say anything more – just come and check yourself.

6. Ginger Pig (London) – to be honest I don’t always need to go out to have a great steak, it’s quite easy to make it at home. You need a good quality grilled pan, some butter, oil, garlic, rosemary, a piece of great meat and that’s it. I fry my steaks on the hottest pan my hob can make one minute (1.5 if the cut is larger) each site and then another minute with some extra butter for a better crust. If I am in London I would buy my beef from Ginger Pig’s little shop in Marylebone. It’s not cheap but try it once and you will never want anything else.

Wish list: Hawksmoor Seven Dials (London) – apparently this is where London steak lovers choose to eat at the moment. You will definitely see me there soon!

Hope I made you hungry too.
